Welcome to the VLAM Wood Care Guide. Our wooden products are made from premium, natural wood.
While every piece is crafted with care and quality, wood is a living material.
Understanding its nature and following proper care practices ensures your VLAM product remains beautiful, durable, and functional for years to come.
Understanding Your Wood
Natural Characteristics
Natural wood may feature unique imperfections, hairline cracks, knots, or tonal variations.
These features are part of the wood’s character and are not defects.
Wood is alive
Wood expands and contracts with seasonal humidity changes.
Minor cracks, slight warping, or shifting joints can occur over time and are normal for all wooden products, including furniture.
With proper care, these effects can be minimized or sometimes completely avoided.
Environmental Effects
Wood reacts to heat, moisture, and sunlight.
Extreme conditions like direct sunlight, heaters, fireplaces, or high-humidity areas can accelerate wear, cracking, or discoloration.

What we cover:
Workmanship issues: Defects caused during manufacturing.
Transit damage: Damage during delivery.
What we don’t cover:
Accidental damage or wear after delivery.
Improper maintenance or neglect.
Customer care:
We are happy to provide guidance, advice, and tips to maximize the longevity of your wooden product.
Daily Cleaning & Hygiene
Proper cleaning is critical to protect the natural oils, prevent warping, and maintain hygiene.
1. Cleaning after use:
Use warm water and mild dish soap with a soft cloth or sponge.
Do not soak or submerge wooden products. Water penetration can cause warping, cracking, or splitting.
Never place wood in a dishwasher. The combination of heat and moisture damages fibers permanently.
Dry immediately after washing. Pat with a towel and stand upright to allow airflow on both sides.
2. Hygiene Tips:
Avoid harsh chemical cleaners such as bleach, high-acid cleaners, or disinfectant wipes. These can strip natural oils and dry the wood.
After cleaning, ensure full drying to prevent mold or mildew.
Pro Tip: Use a soft brush (kitchen sponge) for textured surfaces or grooves to remove trapped food particles.
Oiling & Conditioning
Oiling is the single most important step to protect, moisturize, and maintain your wood.
Why oil?
Prevents drying, cracking, and splitting.
Creates a natural moisture barrier, making wood resistant to stains and liquids.
Enhances the natural color and grain of the wood.
Recommended oil:
Use food-grade mineral oil and beeswax combination provided by VLAM.
Avoid olive, vegetable, or cooking oils — they can go rancid and leave unpleasant odors.
How to oil your wood:
Clean and dry your wood thoroughly.
Apply a generous layer of VLAM food-grade mineral oil over all surfaces.
Allow the oil to penetrate for several hours or overnight.
Wipe off any excess oil with a clean, dry cloth.
Optional: For extra protection, use a beeswax and mineral oil blend to add water resistance and durability provided by VLAM.
Oiling frequency:
Minimal use: once a month
Frequent home use: every few weeks
Professional or heavy use: weekly
Maintenance & Repair
Even with proper care, wood may develop scratches, cuts, or minor damage over time. Here’s how to maintain and repair your VLAM products (at your own risk)
Refer to our Maintenance & Repair instructional video on our website.
1. Resurfacing
Sand deep scratches or scores using progressively finer sandpaper ( 180 → 220 grit).
After sanding, re-oil the surface to restore protection and finish provided by VLAM. 2. Avoid serrated knives or cleavers
Serrated or heavy cleaving can splinter wood fibers and reduce longevity.
Use smooth-bladed knives for cutting on boards whenever possible.
Placement, Storage & Environmental Care
Avoid extreme conditions:
Direct sunlight can fade and dry wood.
Heat sources such as fireplaces, heaters, and ovens can cause warping or cracking.
Excess moisture causes swelling, mold, and joint shifts.
Proper storage:
After cleaning, always dry thoroughly and store upright to allow airflow on all sides.
Avoid stacking heavy objects on wood surfaces, which can cause indentations or warping.
Use boards wisely:
Consider using dedicated boards for wet or raw items to simplify cleaning and minimize wear.
Regularly inspect for minor cracks or splits, which can be easily oiled and maintained.
Long-Term Care Tips
Regular oiling: Maintain a monthly oiling schedule.
Protect from spills: Wipe away liquids promptly.
Avoid cutting extremely hard items (bones, frozen foods) on delicate surfaces.
Periodic inspection: Check joints and edges for minor movement due to natural expansion; tighten if necessary.
By following these guidelines, your VLAM wood products will retain their beauty, character, and functionality for decades.
